We hire approximately 1% of applicants. Our team consists of the best local teachers and top notch professionals who have a calling for education. These high level communicators and motivators include several attorneys, medical doctors, business executives, military officers, college professors, and investment bankers.
1.) Higher quality recruits
Our recruiting process: We became aware of the current members of our teaching staff because they already had excellent teaching and tutoring reputations. We only hire those who have already developed high level teaching skill. We are not simply “hopeful” that the people we hire will be great. We know they will be excellent tutors because they are already outstanding teachers.
Standard franchise process: Most tutoring franchises have teachers that meet two criteria: 1) They are smart, as demonstrated by a sound academic record and, 2) They are willing to work for little money. For the most part, such tutors come from the college or graduate school pool of applicants. Most of their tutors are not teachers and/or do not have much teaching experience. While many are bright, they usually do not have the experience to teach at a high level. In addition, almost all the tutors from such organizations are not interested in teaching as a profession. They view tutoring as a part-time job to last a few years while they finish up school or whatever current situation they are in that requires them to make extra money.
2.) Our Build A Tutoring Practice Based On Excellent Feedback Process
We build the teaching practices of our teachers one client at a time. For that reason, teachers are only assigned new clients if – and only if – they have received excellent feedback over time. Our teachers are long-time members of the communities they serve and, more importantly, only work with us if they are committed to doing so into the indefinite future. Each has built their educational consulting practice through building a client list that depended upon receipt of positive reviews. As such, they care greatly about their reputation for top-notch teaching quality because that is the only way they can build a teaching practice with us.
Standard franchise process: When it comes to quality control, franchises have two major problems: teaching turnover and the teaching assignment process. Teachers at such organizations leave so frequently that there is no way to properly judge the quality of a franchise location. For example, if it was the case that a certain Princeton Review location had a great teacher a few years ago, the location would get an excellent reputation. Continual turnover, however, would suggest that the teacher would likely have left by the time your child enrolled. The new teacher might be good — or might not. In addition, franchises assign clients to teachers based on the number of hours that an employee is supposed to work. So, for example, if a teacher should work 10 hours per week, the teacher will be assigned clients to fit that amount. The teacher has not built a teaching practice based on great reviews but rather works based on meeting an arbitrary number of hours required to work.
3.) Our compensation and treatment of teammates
Our compensation: We pay at rates that are somewhere in the range of 2-5x higher than standard franchises.
Standard franchise compensation: The range starts slightly above minimum wage and has a ceiling that is lower than our teachers’ entry pay.
Our management style: Over time, as the reputation of The Learning Consultants has grown, we have been fortunate to get the pick of the best teachers and tutors in our geographic areas. Part of the reason is that we treat our teachers exceptionally well. We manage the administrative part of the tutoring work and let our teachers teach.
Franchise management style: We have interviewed countless teachers from other tutoring organizations who were discouraged by the bureaucracy, micro-management, and needless procedures that they had to follow. I am sure there are plenty of satisfied teachers at such organizations but, in over a decade of work in this industry, we have yet to come across any.
